Specific Phobia Therapy in Georgia

# Avoiding it works. Until it _doesn't_.

(i know it's unlikely. my body did not get the memo.)

You know the odds. You can explain why the situation is probably okay. Then you get close to it and your body votes no. You change your route, make an excuse, or ask someone else to handle it. The relief is immediate. The next time, the fear is waiting in the same place.

A specific phobia can attach itself to a situation, an object, or an experience you would rather not have to plan around. You do not need to be embarrassed that logic alone has not changed the reaction. Avoidance teaches the alarm to keep sounding, even when you understand what is happening.

We work gradually. Together we map the situations you avoid and create small exposure steps that fit your life. The point is not to throw you into your hardest fear. It is to practice having a choice again where fear has been making the decision for you.

What it looks like

## The detour has become the routine.

- You plan around one particular object or situation.
- You ask someone else to take on a task to avoid facing it.
- You research whether you might encounter the feared thing before going out.
- You feel tense long before the situation actually happens.
- You leave early or cancel when the possibility feels too close.
- You know the fear feels bigger than the risk but cannot talk yourself out of it.

How exposure works

## Start small. Stay _curious_.

(you are allowed to take the first step first.)

We begin with a careful map, not a dare. What do you avoid? What do you predict will happen? What do you do to feel safe if you cannot avoid it? That gives us a useful picture of the fear and the habits keeping it in place.

From there we make a ladder. Steps can start with imagining a situation, looking at a photo, or approaching a real-life setting at a distance. The details depend on the fear, your goals, and what feels possible. You know the plan before you try it.

Exposure means staying with a manageable amount of discomfort long enough to learn something new, rather than escaping at the first signal. We also notice safety behaviors, like constant checking or needing someone to promise nothing will happen. Those can keep the old lesson intact.

CBT can help with the predictions that make a situation feel impossible. We do not need you to repeat 'nothing bad will happen' until you believe it. We work with realistic uncertainty and with what you can do even when your body is sending a loud warning.

Practice between sessions makes the work relevant to the real places you live. We choose a specific assignment, talk about how it went, and adjust. No surprises, no jumping straight to the hardest rung, and no pressure to perform calm for me.

If the feared situation is driving, see driving anxiety therapy (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/driving-anxiety-therapy) for a more specific starting point.

If leaving familiar places has become difficult, read about agoraphobia therapy (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/agoraphobia-therapy).

For the body sensations that sometimes travel with fear, explore panic attack therapy (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/panic-attack-therapy).

What you'll actually do

## Take back one small choice.

1. 01
   ### Map your detours
List what you avoid, what you fear might happen, and what you do to feel safer.
2. 02
   ### Build a ladder
Choose a first step that is uncomfortable but workable rather than starting at the top.
3. 03
   ### Stay for the practice
Try the agreed step while noticing the urge to escape or add a safety ritual.
4. 04
   ### Repeat in real life
Practice where the fear shows up and adjust the next step together.

Common questions

## Before you book.

Will I have to face my biggest fear right away?

No. We build gradual steps together and start where practice is possible.

Is a phobia the same as a panic attack?

They can overlap, but they are not identical. We talk through what happens for you and choose an approach that fits.

Can exposure work happen online?

Yes. Secure telehealth is available across Georgia, and we can plan real-life practice between sessions.

What if I feel embarrassed about the fear?

You do not have to defend it. We focus on the pattern and what you want to be able to do.
