High-Functioning Anxiety Therapy in Alpharetta, GA

# Everyone thinks you are _handling it_.

(you are. that is the expensive part.)

High-functioning anxiety is not a formal diagnosis. It is a description, and it is the most accurate one most of my clients have ever heard about themselves. You deliver. You are the reliable one. You answer the message, hit the deadline, remember the birthday, and hold the whole plan in your head. Nobody worries about you, because there has never been a reason to.

Underneath that, your baseline is dread. Not sadness, not crisis. A steady hum that says something is about to go wrong and it will be your fault for not catching it. You are not failing at anything. You are paying a private tax on every ordinary day, and you have been paying it so long that you think it is just your personality.

I work with adults and teens in exactly this position, in person in Alpharetta and by secure telehealth throughout Georgia.

What it looks like

## Competent on the outside. _Loud on the inside._

- You wake up already behind on a day with nothing scheduled.
- You over prepare, then feel like a fraud when it goes well, because obviously it only went well because you over prepared.
- You reread your own emails looking for the tone problem.
- Rest feels illegal. Doing nothing produces guilt within about eleven minutes.
- You say yes fast and resent it later, quietly, at nobody.
- You fall asleep fine and wake at 3am with a full agenda.
- Praise slides off you. One piece of criticism sticks for a month.

Why it goes untreated for years

## Nothing has _broken_ yet.

(anxiety that produces results is anxiety nobody interrupts.)

Most anxiety gets treated when it costs something visible. Someone stops going to work. Someone cannot drive. Someone has an attack in public. High functioning anxiety never triggers that alarm, because it produces the opposite of visible cost. It produces promotions, tidy houses, and a reputation for being unshakeable. Your anxiety is being rewarded, so no one, including you, treats it as a problem worth fixing.

The cost does exist, it is just filed elsewhere. It shows up in sleep that is thin and unrefreshing, in a jaw that aches, in a stomach that reacts to your calendar. It shows up in relationships, where the people closest to you get the irritable, checked out version of you because you spent the whole day performing steadiness for everyone else. It shows up as flatness, where things you used to enjoy have quietly become tasks.

We work with CBT, and with the honest examination of the rules you are living under. Most people in this category are running a set of unexamined agreements: if I stop, it falls apart. If I disappoint someone, I lose them. My value is my output. Those rules feel like facts. They are not, and they can be tested.

The other half is behavioral, and it is where the discomfort lives. You cannot simply be told to do less, because doing less is the exact thing your anxiety says is dangerous. So we treat it like any avoidance. Small, deliberate experiments in doing it imperfectly, replying slower, saying you cannot, leaving the thing at ninety percent, and finding out what actually happens. Usually nothing happens. That is the data your nervous system has never been allowed to collect.

You will not lose your edge. That is the fear underneath the fear, and it comes up in almost every consult. The goal is that your standards stay and the dread stops being the engine.

What you'll actually do

## Homework for people who are _excellent_ at homework.

1. 01

    ### Name the rules

We write down the actual agreements you are living by, in plain sentences. Seeing them on paper does about half the work.

2. 02

    ### Run one experiment a week

Send it unproofread. Say no once. Leave at five. We predict the disaster in advance, then compare it to what happened.

3. 03

    ### Practice being unavailable

Short, scheduled periods of not responding, not optimizing, not preparing. Timed, so it is a task, which is a language you speak.

4. 04

    ### Regulate in ninety seconds

Two or three nervous system tools that work in a car or a bathroom, not a candlelit room you will never have time for.

Straight talk

## When I'm _not_ the right fit.

- You want to vent for fifty minutes and leave with nothing to do. This work is active.
- You want to keep the anxiety exactly as is and just feel better about it. I will be honest with you about that on the consult.
- You are experiencing thoughts of suicide or self harm. Call or text 988. That needs a higher level of care than I provide.
- Depression is the main event rather than a side effect of exhaustion. I focus on anxiety and OCD, and I will refer you to someone better suited.

If any of that is you, I'll say so on the consult and point you toward someone who's a better fit.

Common questions

## Before you book.

Is high-functioning anxiety a real diagnosis?

Not officially. It usually meets criteria for generalized anxiety or social anxiety once we look closely, and the label matters less than the pattern.

Will therapy make me less driven?

That is the most common worry I hear. The drive is usually yours. The dread is the passenger. We aim at the passenger.

How long does it take?

Most people feel a shift within about eight sessions. Some stay longer to consolidate it. The goal is that you graduate.

I only have time for one appointment. Where is the office?

290 S Main St, Suite 200 in Alpharetta, with easy parking. If that hour does not exist in your week, telehealth is available anywhere in Georgia.

## Stop paying _interest_ on this.

A free 15-minute call. You tell me what's going on. I tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit.
