Contamination OCD Therapy in Georgia

# When clean never feels _clean enough_.

(i washed already. why doesn't it feel like i did?)

You touch a door handle and immediately start calculating where your hands have been. Maybe you can wait until you get home to wash. Maybe you cannot. Either way, a tiny ordinary moment has become the loudest part of your day.

Contamination fears can pull you into long washing routines, changing clothes, wiping down objects, or avoiding places you would rather go. Sometimes the concern is germs. Sometimes it is a feeling of dirtiness you cannot quite explain. The rules keep changing, and the relief from following them never sticks around for long.

If this sounds familiar, we can work on the loop without shaming you for wanting to feel safe. Exposure and Response Prevention, or ERP, is a gradual way to practice touching what you have been avoiding while reducing the rituals that keep the fear in charge. We make a plan together, not a surprise test.

What it looks like

## Your day has an invisible cleaning schedule.

- You wash until it feels right, not just until your hands are clean.
- You keep separate clean and dirty zones at home.
- You ask someone else to touch things so you do not have to.
- You change clothes after a trip that other people would call routine.
- You avoid public restrooms, shared objects, or certain rooms.
- You search for certainty about whether something was contaminated.
- You feel briefly better after cleaning, then find a new reason to start again.

How ERP helps

## Make room for the _ordinary_.

(a doorknob does not need to run the day.)

We start by getting specific. What sets off the alarm? What do you do next? Washing is one possibility, but so are mentally tracing what touched what, asking for reassurance, and having someone else do a task. Seeing the whole sequence gives us a place to start.

Then we build a list of manageable situations. An early step might be touching a low-stakes object and waiting a little longer before washing. Another might be using a shared surface and carrying on with the next part of your day. You help choose the step and the pace.

The response prevention part matters just as much as exposure. If you touch the object and then quietly rehearse every possible consequence for an hour, the fear still gets its usual attention. We practice noticing that mental ritual and coming back to what you actually want to be doing.

This is not about ignoring ordinary hygiene or taking reckless risks. It is about noticing when anxiety has added an extra set of rules on top of normal life. We can separate reasonable care from the repeated action that only buys a few minutes of relief.

Between sessions, you get one small assignment that fits your real week. We review what happened, adjust what was too big or too easy, and try again. The goal is more freedom to choose how you spend your time, even when certainty is not available.

For the treatment method itself, see ERP for OCD (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/erp-ocd-therapy) and what practicing between sessions can look like.

If the fear also comes with repeated checking, read about checking OCD therapy (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/checking-ocd-therapy).

When the ritual happens in your head rather than at the sink, intrusive thoughts therapy (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/intrusive-thoughts-therapy) explains that side of the loop.

What you'll actually do

## Practice in the places that matter.

1. 01
   ### Map the rules
Write down what counts as contaminated, the cleaning rituals that follow, and the places you avoid.
2. 02
   ### Choose a first step
Pick a tolerable exposure together instead of jumping to the hardest thing on your list.
3. 03
   ### Wait out the urge
Practice leaving a ritual unfinished while the uncomfortable feeling has room to rise and fall.
4. 04
   ### Bring it home
Try one planned exercise in your everyday space, then discuss what you learned next session.

Common questions

## Before you book.

Will you make me touch something dangerous?

No. ERP is planned together and does not require reckless behavior. We focus on extra rules and rituals, not on abandoning normal hygiene.

Do I have to stop washing all at once?

No. We choose gradual steps and work on one part of the pattern at a time. You have a say in the plan.

Can this work by telehealth?

Yes. Secure telehealth is available anywhere in Georgia, and the Alpharetta office is available for in-person sessions.

What if I am not sure this is OCD?

You do not have to decide from a website. We can talk about what is happening on the free consult and whether this approach is a fit.

## Ready when _you_ are.

A free 15-minute call. You tell me what's going on. I tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit.
