Checking OCD Therapy in Georgia

# You checked. Then you checked _again_.

(i saw the stove was off. did i really see it?)

You turn around halfway down the driveway. Was the door locked? You remember turning the key, but the memory feels strangely thin. You check once more, and for a moment that settles it. By the time you reach the next light, you are wondering whether you checked the right door.

The thing being checked might be a lock, a stove, an email, a work document, or a memory of what you said. The common thread is the demand to feel absolutely certain. Each new check answers one version of the question and gives the next version room to grow.

If this sounds familiar, we can look at the pattern together. ERP helps you practice leaving a check unfinished and carrying the uncomfortable doubt with you, one doable step at a time. You do not need to win an argument with the thought before you can get on with your day.

What it looks like

## One last check is never the last one.

- You photograph a locked door or an unplugged appliance for proof.
- You retrace your steps to see whether you missed something.
- You reread messages after sending them to hunt for a mistake.
- You ask someone else to confirm a task was done.
- You replay a conversation to check whether you said something wrong.
- You use a particular sequence so a check feels complete.
- You run late because leaving takes longer than it should.

How ERP helps

## A memory does not need a _receipt_.

(you can leave without taking another photo.)

We start with the exact kind of checking that is stealing time. How many times do you check? What makes you go back? What counts as enough, and does that rule stay the same tomorrow? Naming the details keeps us from treating every worried thought as the same problem.

Next we build an exposure ladder. You might lock the door once, notice the urge to turn back, and keep going for a short distance. Or send a low-stakes message without rereading it afterward. These steps are chosen together, and they can be made smaller when needed.

A check can happen without moving a muscle. Replaying what you saw, testing how vivid a memory feels, or asking yourself whether you are really sure are mental checks. We practice catching those too. Otherwise a physical ritual can simply move into your head.

ERP asks you to leave a little uncertainty unanswered. That does not mean making careless choices. It means doing a normal task once and resisting the extra checks anxiety demands. CBT can help you notice the belief that a feeling of doubt is evidence of a real mistake.

Between sessions, we plan specific practice in your own routines. We look at what the urge was like, whether you got pulled back into checking, and what to change next. Getting stuck is information for the plan, not a failing grade.

If reassurance from someone else is part of your routine, why reassurance makes anxiety louder (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/resources/reassurance-seeking) gets into that cycle.

For doubts that come as upsetting thoughts rather than visible tasks, explore intrusive thoughts therapy (https://thesolacespacetherapy.com/intrusive-thoughts-therapy).

What you'll actually do

## One check. Then back to life.

1. 01
   ### Count the repeats
Notice which situations pull you back and how checking changes over the course of a day.
2. 02
   ### Make a ladder
Start with a low-stakes check you can shorten, and agree on the next small step.
3. 03
   ### Catch mental checks
Spot memory reviews and inner debates that keep going after you walk away.
4. 04
   ### Practice leaving
Try a planned task once, tolerate the doubt, and return to the thing you intended to do.

Common questions

## Before you book.

Is checking a lock once a problem?

No. Ordinary checking is part of daily life. We look at repeated checks that keep expanding and interfere with what you want to do.

What if I actually forget something important?

We do not ask you to be careless. We work on the extra checks beyond reasonable care, at a pace you choose.

Do you work on mental checking too?

Yes. Reviewing a memory or running an internal test can be part of the same pattern, even when nobody else sees it.

Where do sessions happen?

In person in Alpharetta or by secure telehealth anywhere in Georgia. The initial 15-minute consult is free.

## Ready when _you_ are.

A free 15-minute call. You tell me what's going on. I tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit.
